In 1807, a bill was passed by Parliament abolishing the trade with enslaved people within the British colonies, followed by the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. In 1792, 400,000 Britons, particularly women, boycotted slave-grown sugar. The Quakers were the first to voice opposition to slavery. Sugar became part of the British national diet and thus sustained the slave trade.
